Welcome to Wine Country Quilts
Wine Country Quilts came into being in 2007 after a small group of dedicated quilters decided to follow a vision and organize an East Coast wide quilt exhibition, which was subsequently held in April 2008 at the historic Pukeora Estate, Waipukurau. Just over 1200 people visited this highly successful exhibition coming to Central Hawke’s Bay from all around New Zealand and some from offshore. Following on from that initial exhibition, plans were made to continue the showcase event on a biennial basis with a second successful exhibition held in 2010, then in 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018 and most recently in 2021 at Hawke's Bay A & P Showgrounds in Hastings (exhibition was delayed a year due to 2020 COVID19 lockdown).
Wine Country Quilts committee have been working hard to find a more suitable venue for the next exhibition and have secured Toitoi Hawke's Bay Arts and Event Centre (previously Hawke's Bay Opera House), 101 Hastings Street South, Hastings. The recently upgraded, strengthened and refurbished facility will provide an excellent backdrop for showcasing the quilts in our biennial exhibition.
Why an exhibition and why the East Coast of New Zealand? The organizing committee wanted to:
- Promote and showcase patchwork, quilting and quilt makers on New Zealand’s East Coast from East Cape to the Wairarapa.
- Highlight the traditional and contemporary aspects of patchwork and quilting.
- Encourage young people to participate in working with fabric as an artistic medium.
- Promote Hawke’s Bay.
